Once again this summer, the Tour de France will have a stage finish on the Alpe d’Huez. However the Oisans region will benefit from three stages within reach a days ride of accommodation close to Le Bourg d’Oisans. Stage 18 (185km) from Gap to Saint Jean de Maurienne will see the tour coming through Allemont and then over the Col du Glandon. The next day, stage 19 (138km) from St Jean de Maurienne to La Toussuire passes over the Col de La Croix du Fer and of course Stage 19 (110km) from Modane to Alpe d’Huez via the Col du Galibier.

Cycling fans from all over the will stake their claim to the best viewing spots on the Alpe d’Huez over a week prior to the stage. As the day approaches more and more will join the spectators on the climb and the party will start to ramp up. The night prior to the Alpe d’Huez stage, a snake of lights from campers and parties lining the 21 bends can be seen from Bourg d’Oisans and the low thud of party music fills the air. By the time of the race hundreds of thousands of spectators will line the route. Possibly the most famous corner on the climb is the Dutch corner just below Huez, which will be a sea of orange and a very lively party.

Accommodation is extremely hard to find during this week, but Bike Lodging still have a few available options.

La Danchere Lodge – A great value option in a charming hotel at the entrance to the Ecrins National Park. The hotel is surrounded by beautiful gardens with a public bar, which are one of the nicest places to relax in the area after a big ride.

Ecrins Self-Catered Chalet – A modern 6 bedroom chalet (2013) built and decorated to a very high standard is located in the picturesque hamlet of La Danchere at the entrance to the Ecrins National Park. Rented by the week self-catered

Apartment Les Cristallieres – 2 bedroom (+ mezzanine) apartment in the centre of the beautiful mediaeval village of Venosc. Bedroom 1 has a double bed and the second has 2 sets of bunks. The mezzanine has a further single bed. It has a very light open plan living room with dinning and kitchen, plus secure storage for bikes and skis.
