Registration opened today for the 2016 edition of La Marmotte Granfondo, a 174km cycling event from Le Bourg d’Oisans to Alpe d’Huez.
Today, at 12am French local time, registration opened for the gruelling La Marmotte Granfondo and other Grand Trophée events such as the Mont Granfondo Ventoux, Lapebie Pyrenees and the Granfondo Saint-Tropez.
La Marmotte 176km event will take place on the 2nd July 2016 and will include over 5000 meters of climbing, starting in Le Bourg d’Oisans and passing over the Col du Glandon (1918), La Telegraph (1570), Col du Galibier (2642m), Col du Lautaret (2057m) and finishing on the famous 21 bends of Alpe d’Huez (1880m).
The course for the 2015 edition of La Marmotte was changed from its usual route due to the closure to the Tunnel du Chambon between the Col du Lautaret and Le Bourg d’Oisans. This tunnel remains closed, but a temporary alternative route is being constructed and due to open in time for the 2015/2016 winter ski season.
The 2016 route will likely revert back to the original route described above.
Due to the huge number so of cyclists taking part in this event, hotels and other accommodation are booked up very early.
Bike lodging is based near Le Bourg d’Oisans and know the region and businesses in the area extremely well. We have complied a list of available places and posted a selection of featured accommodations of different size and style below.
Chalet Bourg d’Arud – (sleeps 14) Located in the valley on the popular route from Bourg to La Bérarde, this former hotel has 14 rooms, but only a license to accommodate 14 people. This makes it an ideal for groups of lads (or ladies) who all want their own rooms. The Hotel has been tastefully converted and most rooms have south facing balconies.
Ecrins Self-Catered Chalet – (sleeps 14) A brand new 6 bedroom chalet (2013) built and decorated to a very high standard is located in the picturesque hamlet of La Danchere at the entrance to the Ecrins National Park. New swimming pool and sauna foe summer 2016. €450 per night (plus €140 cleaning fee) or €75 per person per night half-board.
La Danchere Lodge – (sleeps 28) A great value option in a charming hotel at the entrance to the Ecrins National Park. The hotel is surrounded by beautiful gardens with a public bar, which are one of the nicest places to relax in the area after a big ride.
Their half-board price at this time would be just €65 per person per night.
Chalet La Chardon – (sleeps 5) Totally renovated inside and out for 2015, this stylish little chalet in Le Bourg d’Arud is perfect for a small group of friends. It sleeps 5 in two bedrooms 1 double bedroom and a triple with a bunk and a single. It has a good size modern kitchen and living/dinning room with wood burning stove. Outside is a small closed off garden and eating area. It sits 300 meters from the gondola link to Les Deux Alpes and close to the local swimming pool, play ground, tennis courts and treetop adventure park. €800 per week
Apartment Les Cristallieres – (sleeps 6/7) 2 bedroom (+ mezzanine) apartment in the centre of the beautiful mediaeval village of Venosc. Bedroom 1 has a double bed and the second has 2 sets of bunks. The mezzanine has a further single bed. It has a very light open plan living room with dinning and kitchen, plus secure storage for bikes and skis. €800 per week
Hotel Cassini – (sleeps 24) High quality Dutch owned hotel in the heart of cycling and mountain bike country between Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes. 5night package in standard double en-suite room €520 per person for half-board.

Le Bourg d’Oisans Studio – (sleeps 2) A beautifully renovated studio with vaulted ceilings on the ground floor of a stone farmhouse. Comfortable double or twin beds. Sofa bed. Modern separate bathroom with extremely good shower. Kitchinette, table and chairs. UK Freeview Television with DVD player. The studio also has access to a secure bike shed and workshop. €500 per week.
Auberge La Douce Montagne – is located in the valley at the start of the climb to the col du Glandon and Croix de Fer and just 10km from the bottom of the climb to Alpe d’Huez. The hotel is full, but they have some chalet and apartments available.
