Tunnel du Chambon

Tunnel du Chambon – Alternative route linking Bourg d’Oisans and the Col du Galibier almost finished

The temporary route being built to replace the closed Tunnel du Chambon is near completion and should be ready in time for the 2015/2016 winter season. Since April 2015, the Tunnel du Chambon has been out of action, closing the road between Grenoble and Le Bourg d’Oisans from La Grave, Col du Lautaret, Col du Galibier and Briancon. The temporary alternative route is being built on the other side of the lake and will feature a 400 meter stretch of single carriageway with traffic lights. It is expected that the road will suffer from closures during the winter due to a high risk of avalanches. A more permanent tunnel has been proposed on the original side of the lake, cut deeper into the mountain.
